The hiccup is a sudden and involuntary contraction of inspiratory muscles (intercostals and diaphragm) that ends with a closing of the epiglottis, producing the sound we all know. In humans, the abrupt rush of air into the lungs causes the vocal cords to close, creating a "hic" sound. It occurs more often in men than in women.
