In July 2010 it was reported that Peter Jackson had signed on to direct both parts of "The Hobbit". Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving, who played characters in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy that also appear in The Hobbit, are attached to reprise their roles of Gandalf, Gollum and Elrond respectively.
